YHWH is the proper name of the Judeo-Christian God. The name is a variation on the Hebrew word meaning "to be," and is often translated into English Bibles as "I am that I am."

The correct pronunciation of YHWH has been lost over the years, as Hebrew recorded only consonants until about 800 AD. Furthermore, the name itself was considered sacred and could only be pronounced by the high priest on Yom Kippur, and only in the temple. Thus, when vowels were recorded, different vowels were inserted. This led to the name Jehovah as being the proper name, although recent reconstructions reveal that the name is probably closer to Yahweh.
