William Whewell (1794—1866) was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge University. He was one of the most influential figures of 19th century thought. For several decades after his death his importance to 19th century thought was all but forgotten. He was then "rediscovered in the 20th century by critics of logical positivism." [1]
