Satanism is a religion synthesized by Anton Szandor LaVey based on his own observations and the wisdom of other advocates of materialism, pragmatism and individualism. It is often misused by many to refer to the worship of an actual being named Satan as described in the Christian Bible.

Satanism was first created as a religion on the night of April 30th and the early morning of May 1st, 1966, on the Spring Equinox (Walpurgisnacht). The creator, Anton Szandor LaVey, created Satanism and also started the official Church of Satan. The Church of Satan was founded in San Francisco, California, where LaVey lived, but has since moved. LaVey died on October 29th, 1997, and the next High Priestess, Blanch Barton, took his place. Peter H. Gilmore succeeded her by appointment in 2001. Gilmore moved the Church of Satan headquarters to Hell’s Kitchen in New York City, New York.

Core beliefs

Satanists do not worship any God, metaphysical beings or any of the other things which man can worship. The Satanist chooses him or herself as God.

Satanists practice many morals and values, including but not exclusive to:

  • Do unto others as they do unto you”.
  • That indulging in The Seven Deadly Sins (Lust, Anger, Greed, Pride, Sloth, Envy, and Gluttony), leads to personal satisfaction.
  • Indulgence over Abstinence.
  • Kindness and respect only to those who deserve it.
  • Healthy skepticism
  • Do not hurt any animals unless for food or for protection.

Concerning minors

Although they are not restricted from practicing Satanism, it is impossible to join the Church of Satan as a minor. Pastors and preachers have in the past said Satanism is the capturing of young children. This is not true considering young children is not permitted.

Concerning Pseudo-Satanists

There are many fake organizations that are split into three groups of Pseudo-Satanism. Theistic Satanists who believe in the Devil as an entity, copy-cat Satanists who claim to be the real form of the Church of Satan, and Satanic Cults.

Theistic Satanist organizations such as the Temple of Set, Demonolatry, and Diabolists consider the Devil to be a real being and a God.

Copy-cat Satanists are organizations like the Church of Satan who have a superficially similar basis as The Church of Satan, but have come after the creation of the Church of Satan, claiming to be the true followers of LaVey and their individual selves.

Satanic Cults are a fantasy created by the irrational "Satanic Panic" of the 70's and 80's, created by the unscrupulous to take advantage of the gullible. The FBI has confirmed that all allegations of the actions of such groups were false.

Satanists practice a form of magic. There is Greater Magic and Lesser Magic.

Greater Magic consists of three rituals; the destruction ritual, the lust ritual, and the compassion ritual. These rituals are the basis of Satanic magic and are meant as psycho-dramas. They involve ritual, ceremony, and any other elements that are conducive to the desired effects.

Lesser magic is the use of "[...]wile and guile obtained through various devices and contrived situations, which when utilized, can create "change in accordance with one's will."" [1] Lesser magic consists of three "Glamours" by which lesser magic is accomplished. The three glamours are sex, sentiment and wonder, or any combination of these. [1]
