Nigeria (pronounced /naɪˈdʒɪrɪə/), officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutional republic comprising thirty-six states and one Federal Capital Territory. The country is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast lies on the Gulf of Guinea, a part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the south. The capital city is Abuja. The three largest and most influential ethnic groups in Nigeria are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.

Religion in Nigeria[]

According to a 2003 survey, the population of Nigeria is 48.2% Christian (15% Protestant, 13.7% Roman Catholic and 19.6% other denominations) and 50% Muslim, primarily Sunni. The south of the country is predominantly Christian and the north is predominantly Muslim. Elements of Sharia law have recently been introduced into the previously secular legal codes of some northern states.

Minority religions with a presence in Nigeria include Hinduism, Judaism, the Baha'i Faith and the Hare Krishna movement. Less than 0.1% of Nigeria is Buddhist.
