Mausoleum of Halicarnassus

Artist's impression of the Mausoleum.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is the tomb of King Mausollos of Caria. While the life of Mausollos was unremarkable, his tomb was famous for its numerous sculptures created by the Greek sculptors Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas, and Timotheus, who were each responsible for one side of the Mausoleum. It was destroyed early in the 16th century CE by the Knights of St John of Malta who used the stones of the Mausoleum to build and fortify a castle.
