The Republic of Madagascar (older name Malagasy Republic, French: République Malgache), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. The main island, also called Madagascar, is the fourth-largest island in the world, and is home to 5% of the world's plant and animal species.
Two thirds of the population live below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.
Religion in Madagascar
The traditional Malagasy religion is followed by 50% of the people of Madagascar, 45% of people are Christians (roughly evenly divided between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Islam is the religion of 10% of Madagascar's inhabitants, including native Malagasys and people whose families come from India, Pakistan and the Comoros. About 0.1% of the people of Madagascar are Buddhists. A Hindu minority has been presnt in Madagascar since 1900.
