Louise Holladine

Sophie von der Pfalz als Indianerin

In 1644 Louise painted this portrait of her sister Sophia of Hanover.

Louise Marie of the Palatinate, also named Louise Holladine (18 April 1622 -11 February 1709) was a daughter of Frederick V, Elector Palatine and Elizabeth Stuart.

Louise Marie's paternal grandparents were Frederick IV, Elector Palatine and his wife Countess Louise Juliana of Nassau. Her maternal grandparents were James I of England and his wife Anne of Denmark. James was son of Mary, Queen of Scots and Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley.

Louise Marie was a talented portrait painter and graphic artist, a talent that she shared with her brother Prince Rupert. She was student of Gerard van Honthorst and painted so ably in his style that some of her works were attributed to him. To the dismay of her Protestant family, she converted to the Catholic faith and she fled to France. With the support of Louis XIV of France, she was later abbess of the convent Maubuisson.

The princess is considered an "amateur". Her portraits are often in the baroque style of Honthorst, but there are exceptions, which were likely not commissioned. Some of her works were kept within her family, and some can be found in German museums.
