Father John Berg, F.S.S.P. (B 1970) is the current and third Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. He was elected on 7 July 2006 by the General Chapter of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter at its mother house in Wigratzbad, Germany for a six-year term. An American citizen, Berg studied philosophy at Thomas Aquinas College and theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. Ordained by Scranton Bishop James Timlin in 1997, he has worked as both a pastor and as a seminary professor.
On the one-year anniversary of Berg's election to Superior General, 7 July 2007, Pope Benedict XVI issued the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum,[1] reaffirming the essential place of the traditional liturgy that Fr. Berg and the Fraternity of St. Peter celebrate exclusively. Berg has celebrated the Roman Rite under laws in force in 1962, in accordance with the charism of his society. He has offered the Mass in Latin (Low Mass, Sung Mass, or Solemn Mass). This Mass is The Extraordinary form of the Roman Catholic Rite.
Until his election to Superior General, Berg frequently led boys camps and Domus Christiani[clarification needed] in Sacramento and Concord, California, and gave spiritual talks to their members. Following the model of St. John Bosco, Berg used sports to attract youths to religion.
