He was made cardinal-priest of SS. Nereo e Achilleo on 30 May 1371 by his uncle, Pope Gregory XI. Then, he became grand penitentiary (1373) and cardinal-bishop of Palestrina (28 September 1376). Initially, he supported the election of Pope Urban VI in April 1378, but shortly thereafter, he adhered to the obedience of Antipope Clement VII and served as his legate in France. He died in Avignon.
