The Institute for Humanist Studies (IHS) is a humanist think tank. It is a non-profit organization, for non-theistic, and secular, Humanism. IHS is a Specialist Member of the International Humanist and Ethical Union.

The official symbol of IHS is a version of the Happy Human, which is the current official symbol of the IEHU.


The IHS publishes a weekly electronic newsletter, the Humanist Network News. This deals with current US and international Humanist issues.

The E-newsletter contains Freethunk [1], a cartoon made for Freethinkers which often parodies Religious Fundamentalism.

Other activities

  • IHS has offices in Albany, New York, United States. The base of the IHS is the Humanist Center, which was purchased with a private donation.
  • The IHS administers the IHS Grant Fund, which manages $130,000 per year. Camp Quest Canada was created this with grant.
  • IHS offers free Web hosting to Humanist and related websites through
  • IHS operates the Continuum of Humanist Education, "...the world's first interactive, online curriculum centered around humanist thought."
