Links using URLs

Just type it

The simplest way to create a link is by adding the URL of the page you want to link to. Typing

http://religion.wikicities.com/

gives

Notice the little symbol at the end of the link that marks it as such.

Compact links

Sometimes you might not want to display the entire URL of a page. You collapse the entire link down into a reference note. To do this, type the URL in square brackets. Typing

gives

Link text

Often it is easier to place some descriptive text as the link rather than displaying the URL. Again, type the URL in square brackets. At the end of the URL, but before the closing bracket, type a single space and enter the text you would like to display as the link. Typing

Visit the Religion-wiki website

gives

Wikilinks

Remembering and typing out the URL of a page can be a bit cumbersome, so there is handier way of may links from one wiki page to another: the wikilink.

Links within Religion-wiki

Within Religion-wiki link to another page by typing double square brackets around the page name. Typing

Main Page

gives

Note that an underscore is not needed. You could type Main_Page, but we don't think it looks as nice as Main Page.

If the page is not in the main article namespace, remember to include the namespace in the link. Typing

Help:Contents

gives

If your link is to the same page on which it is written, it will appear as bold text rather than a link. Typing

Help:Links

gives

Help:Links

Piped links

You can use a descriptive link text instead of the page's name by adding that text after the pipe symbol. Typing

Religion-wiki's main page

gives

Religion-wiki has a rather nifty way of making life easy for you. If you just want to remove the namespace prefix from a link's text, typing

Help:Contents

gives

Religion-wiki automatically drops the prefix from the text.

Wikilinks to category pages

A wikilink to a category page is normally added to the foot of the page, in the Categories bar. If you want to add a link to a category in the text of a page, typing

:Category:Buddhism

gives

and doesn't place the link at the bottom of the page. Of course you could type

:Category:Buddhism

giving

Wikilink directly to a section of a page

You can link directly to a specific section of a page by including the name of that section after the hash sign (#) after the page name. Typing

Religion calendar#September

gives

and links directly to that section.

Wikilinks to other Wikia

You can link to any page in another Wikicity by adding that city's prefix at the beginning of the wikilink. For example, the WikiPagan pages use the prefix Pagan:. Typing

Pagan:Main Page

gives

The prefix for the Central Wikicity is Wikia:. Of course, piped links can still be used here.

Wikilinks to other wikis

You can link to any wiki as long as it has a prefix registered on the interwiki map. Probably the most useful of these interwiki links is the prefix Wikipedia:, which gives you a link to any Wikipedia page. Typing

Wikipedia:Wikipedia

gives

This link goes directly to the English-language Wikipedia by default, but you can link to other by placing the two-letter language code as an extra prefix. Typing

Wikipedia:sv:Religion

gives

the Swedish Wikipedia's article on religion.

Wikilinks inside out

If you want to add a link to Religion-wiki in another wiki within Wikia, simply use the prefix Religion:. Typing

Religion:Main Page

gives

If you want to add the link in a wiki beyond Wikia, you have to use the longer prefix Wikia:C:Religion: before the page name. Typing

Wikia:C:Religion:Bible

gives

A core element of the wiki software, links allow you to quickly and simply link to other pages on (or off) the wiki.

How to create simple links

Links are created using one or two square brackets:

For a simple internal link, use two brackets:

Article name

For an internal link that shows different text, use two brackets like you would on a normal link and add a bar (|) in bewtween the article name and your desired text:

text you want

For an internal link to an anchor (heading) on the same page, use the # symbol before the heading name.

#See also

For an external link, use only one bracket:

And for an external link with link text, use one bracket and a space in between the link and your text:

link text
