A boat is a watercraft designed to float on, and provide transport over, water. Usually this water will be inland or in protected coastal areas.. In this article the boat is considered as life and death.

ਨਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹੜਾ ਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਿਰੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥
ना बेड़ी ना तुलहड़ा ना पाईऐ पिरु दूरि ॥१॥
Nā bėṛī nā ṯulhaṛā nā pā­ī­ai pir ḏūr. ||1||
No boat or raft can take you to Him. Your Husband Lord is far away. ||1||

Page 17, Line 13 ਗੁਰੁ ਪਉੜੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
गुरु पउड़ी बेड़ी गुरू गुरु तुलहा हरि नाउ ॥
Gur pa­oṛī bėṛī gurū gur ṯulhā har nā­o.
The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name.

गुरु सरु सागरु बोहिथो गुरु तीरथु दरीआउ ॥
Gur sar sāgar bohitho gur ṯirath ḏarī­ā­o.
The Guru is the Boat to carry me across the world-ocean; the Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Holy River.

Page 20, Line 2 ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇੜੀ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਤਰੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
नानक बेड़ी सच की तरीऐ गुर वीचारि ॥
Nānak bėṛī sacẖ kī ṯarī­ai gur vīcẖār.
O Nanak, the Boat of Truth will ferry you across; contemplate the Guru.

आपे सागरु बोहिथा आपे पारु अपारु ॥
Āpė sāgar bohithā āpė pār apār.
You Yourself are the ocean and the boat. You Yourself are this shore, and the one beyond.

ना बेड़ी ना तुलहड़ा ना तिसु वंझु मलारु ॥
Nā bėṛī nā ṯulhaṛā nā ṯis vanjẖ malār.
There is no boat, no raft, no oars and no boatman.

Bohith cẖaṛa­o jā āvai vār.

ठाके बोहिथ दरगह मार ॥
Ŧẖākė bohith ḏargeh mār.
Those who fail to embark upon that boat shall be beaten in the Court of the Lord.

Pathar kī bėṛī jė cẖaṛai bẖar nāl budāvai. ||4||
If someone embarks on a boat of stone, he shall drown with its cargo. ||4||

Nā ṯar nā ṯulhā ham būdas ṯār lėhi ṯāraṇ rā­i­ā. ||19||
I do not have a boat, or even a raft; I am drowning - save me, O Savior King! ||19||

False is sweetness, false is honey; through falsehood, boat-loads of men have drowned.

Without the boat, one is drowned in the sea of fear, O Beloved; how can I reach the distant shore? ||1||Pause||

हम डोलत बेड़ी पाप भरी है पवणु लगै मतु जाई ॥
Ham dolaṯ bėṛī pāp bẖarī hai pavaṇ lagai maṯ jā­ī.
My boat is wobbly and unsteady; it is filled with sins. The wind is rising - what if it tips over?


Page 990, Line 1 ਭਉ ਬੇੜਾ ਜੀਉ ਚੜਾਊ ॥
भउ बेड़ा जीउ चड़ाऊ ॥
Bẖa­o bėṛā jī­o cẖaṛā­ū.
So let the Fear of God be the boat to carry your soul across.


Page 990, Line 1 ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਾਹੂ ॥੪॥੨॥
कहु नानक देवै काहू ॥४॥२॥
Kaho Nānak ḏėvai kāhū. ||4||2||
Says Nanak, rare are those who are blessed with this Boat. ||4||2||


Page 992, Line 3 ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਜਲ ਸਿਰਿ ਤਰਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ॥
बोहिथु जल सिरि तरि टिकै साचा वखरु जितु ॥
Bohith jal sir ṯar tikai sācẖā vakẖar jiṯ.
The boat crosses over the water, carrying the true merchandise.


Page 1009, Line 11 ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਦੀਆ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥
बिखु बोहिथा लादिआ दीआ समुंद मंझारि ॥
Bikẖ bohithā lāḏi­ā ḏī­ā samunḏ manjẖār.
The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.


Page 1009, Line 12 ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਸਰਾਲੁ ॥੧॥
वंझी हाथि न खेवटू जलु सागरु असरालु ॥१॥
vanjẖī hāth na kẖėvtū jal sāgar asrāl. ||1||
There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||

The True Guru is the boat; the Word of the Shabad will carry them across.

बादि कारा सभि छोडीआ साची तरु तारी ॥७॥
Bāḏ kārā sabẖ cẖẖodī­ā sācẖī ṯar ṯārī. ||7||
Abandoning all evil actions, he crosses over in the boat of Truth. ||7||

आवनि वंञनि ना रहनि पूर भरे पहीआह ॥२॥
Āvan vañan nā rahan pūr bẖarė pahī­āh. ||2||
they all come and go; they cannot remain. They are like boatloads of passengers embarking. ||2||

Pār pavanḏ­ṛė diṯẖ mai saṯgur bohith cẖāṛ. ||6||
I have seen them crossing over there, on the boat of the True Guru. ||6||

Page 1029, Line 9 ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
सतिगुरु बोहिथु आदि जुगादी राम नामि निसतारा हे ॥८॥
Saṯgur bohith āḏ jugāḏī rām nām nisṯārā hė. ||8||
From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, the True Guru has been the boat; through the Lord's Name, He carries us across. ||8||

गुरु बोहिथु गुरु बेड़ी तुलहा मन हरि जपि पारि लंघाइआ ॥१॥
Gur bohith gur bėṛī ṯulhā man har jap pār langẖā­i­ā. ||1||
The Guru is the boat, the ship, the raft; meditating on the Lord in your mind, you shall be carried across to the other side. ||1||

ए मन मेरिआ बिनु बेड़ी पारि न अ्मबड़ै राम ॥
Ė man mėri­ā bin bėṛī pār na ambṛai rām.
O my mind, without a boat, you shall not reach the other shore.

Page 1170, Line 19 ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਬੇੜਾ ਬਾਂਧਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥੧॥
राम नामु जपि बेड़ा बांधहु दइआ करहु दइआला ॥१॥
Rām nām jap bėṛā bāʼnḏẖahu ḏa­i­ā karahu ḏa­i­ālā. ||1||
Chant the Name of the Lord. Build your boat, and pray, "O Merciful Lord, please be merciful to me."||1||


Page 1171, Line 8 ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਪੜਿਆ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬੀਨਾ ਦੁਇ ਅਖਰ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਵਾ ॥
जे तूं पड़िआ पंडितु बीना दुइ अखर दुइ नावा ॥
Jė ṯūʼn paṛi­ā pandiṯ bīnā ḏu­ė akẖar ḏu­ė nāvā.
If you are a learned and wise religious scholar, then make a boat of the letters of the Lord's Name.


Page 1287, Line 15 ਬੰਧੁ ਤੁਟਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਥ ॥
बंधु तुटा बेड़ी नही ना तुलहा ना हाथ ॥
Banḏẖ ṯutā bėṛī nahī nā ṯulhā nā hāth.
The dam has burst. There is no boat. There is no raft. The water's depth is unfathomable.


Page 1290, Line 18 ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਬੇੜੁ ਸਚਾ ਰਖਸੀ ॥
सतिगुरु बोहिथु बेड़ु सचा रखसी ॥
Saṯgur bohith bėṛ sacẖā rakẖsī.
So climb aboard the boat of the True Guru, and the True Lord will rescue you.


Page 1332, Line 14 ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਉਲਟੀ ਨਾਵ ਤਰਾਵੈ ॥
साइर सपत भरे जल निरमलि उलटी नाव तरावै ॥
Sā­ir sapaṯ bẖarė jal nirmal ultī nāv ṯarāvai.
The seven seas are overflowing with the Immaculate Water; the inverted boat floats across.


Page 1410, Line 10 ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਆਲਾਇ ਬੇੜੇ ਡੁਬਣਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਉ ॥੪॥
सतिगुर सिउ आलाइ बेड़े डुबणि नाहि भउ ॥४॥
Saṯgur si­o ālā­ė bėṛė dubaṇ nāhi bẖa­o. ||4||
If you cry out for help from the True Guru, you have nothing to fear - your boat will not sink. ||4||

The True Guru is the Boat of Truth; in the Word of the Shabad, we cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||6||

राम नामु करि बोहिथा जीउ सबदु खेवटु विचि पाइ ॥
Rām nām kar bohithā jī­o sabaḏ kẖėvat vicẖ pā­ė.
Make the Lord's Name your boat, and install the Word of the Shabad as the boatman.

Page 245, Line 17 ਸਬਦੁ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਲਘਾਏ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ॥
सबदु खेवटु विचि पाए हरि आपि लघाए इन बिधि दुतरु तरीऐ ॥
Sabaḏ kẖėvat vicẖ pā­ė har āp lagẖā­ė in biḏẖ ḏuṯar ṯarī­ai.
With the Shabad installed as the boatman, the Lord Himself shall take you across. In this way, the difficult ocean is crossed.

Page 509, Line 14 ਪਥਰ ਪਾਪ ਬਹੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
पथर पाप बहु लदिआ किउ तरीऐ तारी ॥
Pathar pāp baho laḏi­ā ki­o ṯarī­ai ṯārī.
Loaded with so very many stones of sin, how can the boat cross over?

Page 517, Line 11 ਆਪੇ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖੇਵਾਟੁ ॥
आपे सागरु आपे बोहिथा आपे ही खेवाटु ॥
Āpė sāgar āpė bohithā āpė hī kẖėvāt.
He Himself is the ocean, He Himself is the boat, and He Himself is the boatman.

Page 552, Line 9 ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
नामि रता सतिगुरू है कलिजुग बोहिथु होइ ॥
Nām raṯā saṯgurū hai kalijug bohith ho­ė.
The True Guru is imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord; He is the boat in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga.

Page 603, Line 9 ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਉ ਬੇੜਾ ਨਾਉ ਤੁਲਹੜਾ ਭਾਈ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਜਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥੯॥
नानक नाउ बेड़ा नाउ तुलहड़ा भाई जितु लगि पारि जन पाइ ॥४॥९॥
Nānak nā­o bėṛā nā­o ṯulhaṛā bẖā­ī jiṯ lag pār jan pā­ė. ||4||9||
O Nanak, the Name of the Lord is the boat, and the Name is the raft, O Siblings of Destiny; setting out on it, the Lord's humble servant crosses over the world-ocean. ||4||9||

भउजलु पारि उतारिअनु भाई सतिगुर बेड़ै चाड़ि ॥२॥
Bẖa­ojal pār uṯāri­an bẖā­ī saṯgur bėṛai cẖāṛ. ||2||
They got on board the boat of the True Guru, who carried them across the terrifying world-ocean, O Siblings of Destiny. ||2||

Page 1089, Line 16 ਕਾਗਉ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਊਜਲਾ ਲੋਹੇ ਨਾਵ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
कागउ होइ न ऊजला लोहे नाव न पारु ॥
Kāga­o ho­ė na ūjlā lohė nāv na pār.
The crow does not become white, and an iron boat does not float across.

Page 1279, Line 3 ਮੂਲੁ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਗੁਰ ਪਉੜੀ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ॥
मूलु रहै गुरु सेविऐ गुर पउड़ी बोहिथु ॥
Mūl rahai gur sėvi­ai gur pa­oṛī bohith.
Serving the Guru, his capital is preserved. The Guru is the ladder and the boat.

Page 1417, Line 4 ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੋਹਿਥੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਚੜੈ ਤੇ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇ ॥੩੪॥
नानक सतिगुरि बोहिथै वडभागी चड़ै ते भउजलि पारि लंघाइ ॥३४॥
Nānak saṯgur bohithai vadbẖāgī cẖaṛai ṯė bẖa­ojal pār langẖā­ė. ||34||
O Nanak, the very fortunate ones embark on the Boat of the True Guru; they are carried across the terrifying world-ocean. ||34||

Page 40, Line 17 ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਲੋਹੁ ਬੂਡਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
बिनु सतिगुर भेटे कंचनु ना थीऐ मनमुखु लोहु बूडा बेड़ी पासि ॥३॥
Bin saṯgur bẖėtė kancẖan nā thī­ai manmukẖ lohu būdā bėṛī pās. ||3||
Without meeting with the True Guru, no one is transformed into gold. The self-willed manmukh sinks like iron, while the boat is very close. ||3||

Page 40, Line 18 ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਵ ਹੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
सतिगुरु बोहिथु हरि नाव है कितु बिधि चड़िआ जाइ ॥
Saṯgur bohith har nāv hai kiṯ biḏẖ cẖaṛi­ā jā­ė.
The Boat of the True Guru is the Name of the Lord. How can we climb on board?

Page 40, Line 18 ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਇ ॥
सतिगुर कै भाणै जो चलै विचि बोहिथ बैठा आइ ॥
Saṯgur kai bẖāṇai jo cẖalai vicẖ bohith baiṯẖā ā­ė.
One who walks in harmony with the True Guru's Will comes to sit in this Boat.

Page 1402, Line 8 ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅਲਖ ਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਤਾਰਣ ਤਰਣੰ ॥੪॥ सतिगुरु गुरु सेवि अलख गति जा की स्री रामदासु तारण तरणं ॥४॥ Saṯgur gur sėv alakẖ gaṯ jā kī sarī Rāmḏās ṯāraṇ ṯarṇaʼn. ||4|| So serve the Guru, the True Guru; His ways and means are inscrutable. The Great Guru Raam Daas is the Boat to carry us across. ||4||

Page 1404, Line 4 ਭੰਜਨ ਗੜ੍ਹਣ ਸਮਥੁ ਤਰਣ ਤਾਰਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ भंजन गड़्हण समथु तरण तारण प्रभु सोई ॥ Bẖanjan gaṛĥaṇ samath ṯaraṇ ṯāraṇ parabẖ so­ī. He creates and destroys - He is All-powerful; God is the Boat to carry all across.
