Kiribati (pronounced /ˈkiːrɨbæs/, officially the Republic of Kiribati, is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. It is composed of 32 atolls and one raised coral island, dispersed over 3,500,000 square kilometres, (1,351,000 square miles) straddling the equator, and bordering the International Date Line to the east. The name Kiribati is the local pronunciation of "Gilberts", derived from the main island chain, the Gilbert Islands.

Religion in Kiribati[]

Christianity was introduced to Kiribati by missionaries in the 19th century and has become the majority religion in the country. The most popular Christian denomination is Roman Catholicism, followed by 52% of the population, 40% of the population follow Protestantism.

Minority religions with a presence in Kiribati include the Seventh-day Adventist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Islam and the Baha'i Faith. About 0.1% of the people of Kiribati are Buddhists.
