East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste (Tetum: Timor Lorosae; officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste) is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecussi-Ambeno, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The small country of 15,410 km² (5,400 sq mi) is located about 640 km (400 mi) northwest of Darwin, Australia.

Religion in East Timor[]

East Timor is one of only two Asian countries that has a Roman Catholic majority, the other being the Philippines. Roman Catholicism is the nominal religion of 97% of the people of East Timor, about 1% are Protestants, 1% are [[Islam|Muslims], 0.5% are Hindus and 0.1% are Buddhists.

The Roman Catholic Church played an important role in East Timor's struggle for independence from mainly Muslim Indonesia. The constitution recognises the importance of the church in helping to obtain independence but declares East Timor to be a secular state and guarantees religious freedom.
