Nauru /nɑːˈuːruː/, officially the Republic of Nauru and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island nation in the Micronesian South Pacific. The nearest neighbour is Banaba Island in the Republic of Kiribati, 300 km due east. Nauru is the world's smallest island nation, covering just 21 km² (8.1 sq. mi), and the smallest independent republic.

Religion in Nauru[]

Christianity was introduced to Nauru by missionaries in the 19th century and is now the majority religion in the country. According to the 2002 census, Protestantism is the most popular Christian denomination, followed by 51% of the population, 26% of the population are Roman Catholics.

There is a sizeable Buddhist community, making up 11% of the population. Followers of the Baha'i Faith constitute 10% of Nauru's people, making Nauru the country with the largest Baha'i population in the world.

The constitution of Nauru guarantees religious freedom. However Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons in Nauru, mostly foreigners employed by governmemnt-run industries, are not allowed to proselytize.
