UNOFFICIAL NATIONAL ANTHEM OF ENGLAND

The English flag and "Land of Hope and GLory", the unofficial English national anthem.

England is one of the four countries that form part of the United Kingdom, together with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is the largest and most populous constituent country of the United Kingdom. It has a population of around 50 million, with London as its capital.

Religion in England[]

Christianity has been the religion with the largest number of followers in England for centuries, it is the religion which 71.6% of the English population claim to follow. The most popular Christian denominations are Anglicanism, Catholicism and Methodism. Other denominations with a significant number of followers are Quakerism, Congreagationalism, Unitarianism and the Salvation Army. England is the most secular country in the United Kingdom, with surveys revealing around 60% of its people believing in God, 40% believing that Jesus is the Son of God and about 20% believe the Bible is the unique word of God. Only 10% regularly attend a church service.

Judaism was the only noticeable non-Christian religion in Enngland until the twentieth century. Jews first arrived in England following the Norman conquest in 1066. All Jews were officially expelled from England in 1290 and were not allowed to return until 1656. However, historical records show that Jews had begun returning to England before that date.

The arrival in the twentieth century of immigrants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and people of Indian descent from other former British colonies, significantly increased the number of followers of Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism and Islam in England. 31% of the population of England is now Muslim.

Prior to the coming of Christianity to England, the people followed a form of Norse paganism, traces of which can still be found in customs, legends and folklore.
