Dragonnades was a system of billeting troops on Protestant Huguenot households in French so as to "persuade" them to convert to Roman Catholicism. The name comes from the French word for dragoon soldiers - 'dragons'. It was instituted in 1681 by Louis XIV and continued throughout his reign until 1715. It is estimated that between 1681 and 1685, 800,000 to 900,000 Huguenots fled the country to England, Germany, Holland and Switzerland, taking with them valuable commercial skills.
