Religion in the Dominican Republic
Christianity is the religion of 95.2% of the people of the Dominican Republic. The most popular Christian denomination is Roman Catholicism which is followed by 88.6% of the population, Protestantism is followed by 4.2% of the population.
Recent immigration and conversions have increased the numbers of followers of other religions. The inhabitants of the Dominican Republic are 1.1% Mormon, 0.1% Buddhist, 0.1% followers of Chinese folk religion, 0.02% Muslim and 0.01% Jewish.
Judaism arrived in the Dominican Republic when a group of refugees from Nazi Germany arrived in the city of Sosua in the 1930's. Sosua has remained the center of Jewish cultural life in the Dominican republic ever since.
