The Central African Republic (CAR) (French: République Centrafricaine, pronounced: [ʀepyblik sɑ̃tʀafʀikɛn], or Centrafrique [sɑ̃tʀafʀik]; Sango Ködörösêse tî Bêafrîka), is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It borders Chad in the north, Sudan in the east, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the south, and Cameroon in the west.
Religion in the Central African Republic
Approximately 50% of the population follow Christianity. Christians are roughly evenly divided between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Islam is the religion of 15% of the population. Less than 0.1% of the people of the Central African Republic are Buddhists.
The pre-2003 constitution guaranteed religious freedom but outlawed certain forms of Fundamentalism. All religious organizations must be registered with the Ministry of the Interior. The Unification Church has been banned in the Central African Republic since the mid 1980's.
Witchcraft is a criminal offense in the Central African Republic. However, practitioners are usually only prosecuted if they commit other illegal acts as well.
