Balmik Ramayan is a book written by Bhai Santokh Singh in about 1834. Bhai Santokh Singh first translated Amar Kosh, a Granth in Sanskrit into Braj language (versified Hindi) and called this Naam Kosh in 1821. On the insistence of Raja Udai Singh of Kaithal, he also translated Balmik Ramayan, the epic Hindu text into a versified Hindi (Braj Bhasha) also called Braj Bhakha, or Dehaati Zabaan (country tongue) in 1834.

Ram Tirath is a town located about 11 km to the west of Amritsar city on Amritsar Lopoke road. It is an ancient pilgrimage centre associated with the period of the Ramayana. It is said that Sita spent her period of exile at this place in the cottage of Rishi Balmik. It was here that twins were born to Sita who were named Lav and Kush. The great epic Ramayana is also said to have been composed here by Rishi Balmik (or Valmik).

Bhai Santokh Singh, (8 October 1787 - 19 October 1843) the noted author of six important literary works - Naam Kosh, Guru Nanak Parkash, Garb Ganjni Teeka (teeka means translation and explanation of a work), Balmik Ramayan, Atam Purayan Teeka and his magnum opus, Sri Gur Partap Suraj Granth aka Suraj Parkash, was born on 8 October 1787. He was the son of Bhai Deva Singh and Mata Rajadi, professional cloth printers of Nurdin village, also known as Sarai Nurdin, 7 km northwest of Tarn Taran in Amritsar district of the Punjab.
