  • March 4: In an interview with the London Evening Standard, John Lennon claims that the Beatles are "more popular than Jesus." An American magazine, Datebook, reprints the quote, leading to public burnings of Beatles records and memorabilia in the Bible Belt.
  • April 21: Halie Selassie visited Jamaica, Rastafarians consider him to be the second coming of Jesus.
