The years 1601-1700. Part of the early modern period, the 17th century is known as the Age of Reason in Western Civilization.

  • Boers colonize South Africa
  • 1607: Jamestown Settlement becomes the first British colony in North America.
  • 1611: The King James Version of the Bible is completed.
  • 1620: The Mayflower, carrying Calvinist Puritan refugees known as the Pilgrams, flee Plymouth England and head for Virginia. Blown off course, they land at or near Plymouth Rock in the Massachusetts Bay area and found the Plymouth Colony.
  • 1621: Those same Pilgrims share a meal with Native Americans, an event commemorated as the US holiday of Thanksgiving.
  • 1633: The Roman Catholic church condemns Galileo Galilei for heresy after Galileo defends heliocentrism. Legend has it that Galileo said, "and yet it moves" (referring to the Earth's motion around the sun). Pope John Paul II formally apologized for the Galileo affair on (October 31, 1992.
  • 1685: Edict of Fontainebleau outlaws Protestantism in France.
  • 1687: Isaac Newton publishes the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.
  • 1692: Salem witch trials in Massachusetts Bay Colony.
